EEIEEIO Metal Ralph The Dog Garden Sculpture Medium

Recycled metal garden art turns old oil drums, sheet steel and offcuts into birds, animals and sculptures full of personality. Because each piece is cut, shaped and welded by hand, no two are exactly alike — and that's the appeal. Explore the range in our recycled and scrap metal garden art collection.

How These Pieces Are Made

Most recycled metal sculptures start life as 44-gallon drums or scrap sheet steel. Artisans cut the shapes, hammer in texture, then weld the parts together. Original paint, stencilled lettering and dents from the drum's previous life often show through — they are signs of authenticity, not damage.

Handmade Means Unique

  • Colours, markings and patterns vary from the photos.
  • Sizes can differ by a centimetre or two from the listed dimensions.
  • Weld marks and hammered textures are part of the finish.

If you are buying a pair or a set, expect them to be companions rather than identical twins.

How Recycled Metal Weathers

Unpainted and rust-finish pieces develop a deeper orange-brown patina outdoors, especially after rain. This natural rusting is intentional and suits native and cottage gardens alike. As with cast iron, keep rusting pieces off light-coloured paving to avoid staining, or stand them on a paver.

Styling Ideas

Native gardens. Metal birds, lizards and frogs among grasses, grevilleas and rocks look completely at home.

Garden stakes in beds. Stake-mounted pieces lift the sculpture into the foliage — try them in a row along a border.

Walls and fences. Flat cut-out sculptures and wall art break up long expanses of fence or brick.

Gifts. A characterful metal animal is an easy gift for gardeners, animal lovers and anyone who is hard to buy for.

Care

There is very little to do. Brush off debris, and if you want to slow the rusting, apply a clear outdoor lacquer once a year. Pieces kept under cover will stay much as they arrived.
